Does it rain on North Shore? The rain situation is hard to predict. Adrianna and I lived in the condo from August 2000 to August 2001 remodeling it, so we experienced all of the seasons. It is normal for north shore Kauai to have delightful trade showers at night throughout the year. This is how the area gets most of its annual rainfall and it makes for great sleeping with the windows open to the sound of the rain and surf. Temperatures run from lows in the mid sixties to highs to the low eighties. The winter temperatures will drop about three degrees across the board.
When it rains, I mean really rains in the Hawaiian Islands few areas are immune. Low-pressure systems come up from the south and cause sheer lines to hit the landmasses with a vengeance. A good example of this was during the month of January 2002. Adrianna and I were at our Kauai home for a month. We had incredible weather for the first three weeks but during the last week a sheer line hit. The Hanalei area got about four inches in three days. The big island got sixteen inches in 24 hours. A weather system like this can certainly happen but is rare.
Of course Adrianna and I are not the best people to discuss island weather with because we are mesmerized by north shore's beauty in the rain or shine. The temperature remains in the seventies and an incredible gift of colors and waterfalls unfold. It is hard for me to explain so, allow me to describe it with a few pictures.
